With more than 22 official languages and 10-12 scripts India that is Bharat has a unparallel collage of languages and scripts.

All Indian languages find their roots in Sanskrit and all scripts are having roots in Brahmi. One of the scripts is Devnagari. The general belief is “Devnagari script is limited to only northern part of India”, the truth is different.

Many people will find it astonishing that Devnagari script, in one or another time had been official script throughout ancient Bharat. This can be proved beyond doubt by looking at ancient India’s coins. Look here:

Starting from

Chola Rulers of Tamilnad:

Raj Raja Chola

Yudhmal Chola

Vir Kerala of Kerala

Raya of Vijaynagar (Present day areas of Andhrapradesh, Karnatak and some parts of Maharashtra)

Krishna Devraya

Alupas of Udipi

Yadav of Devgiri (Present Day Daulatabad)

Kadambs of Hangal (Goa)

Nayaks of Chitradurg

Parmars of Malwa

Kalchuris of Tripuri

Kutch

Nawanagar

Kannauj

Chandelas

Hindushahi of Kabul

Many of Rulers of Assam, Tripura, Cooch Behar, Kashmir, Punjab etc have minted coins with Devnagari legend.

The above proves beyond doubt that Devnagari is not exclusive script of certain geographical area.

As on date, Devnagari may not be an official script of certain states, but, Sanskrit language and devnagari script is used daily in prayers and rituals all over India.
