2 Rupees coin of 2005-2007, A Study

UNITY IN DIVERSITY, 2 RUPEES COIN

In 2005, the RBI introduced a new two rupees coin. Its obverse shows a

"double plus" symbol with four dots on each side. This coin was
minted in the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. Though officially the theme of this coin is 'unity in diversity', this symbol was believed to be a Christian
cross. When there was a massive public protest against the issue of these Christian Coins, RBI withheld the mintage of this design on 2 Rupees coin from 2007 and withdrew these coins from circulation.

This coin is found with 2 Reverse Die varieties.

Rev Die – I ---------------------------------------------------------------Rev Die – II

Rev Die - I

In this variety the "double plus" symbol measures 18mm in length. This is
found on most of the 2 Rupees coins issued during 2005, 2006 and on coins of Hyderabad mint in 2007.

Rev Die - II

In this variety the "double plus" symbol measures 20mm in length. This is
found on most of the 2 Rupees coins issued during 2007.

This coin is found with 2 Obverse Die varieties.

In this variety the value "2" measures 9mm in height and smaller in size.
The “date” is displayed in bigger numbers. This is found on all the 2 Rupees coins issued during 2005 , 2006 and on coins of Hyderabad mint in 2007..

Obv Die - II

In this variety the value "2" measures 10mm in height and bigger in size.
The “date” is displayed in smaller numbers. This is found on most of the 2
Rupees coins issued during 2007.

a) Obv Die - I and Rev Die - I.

b) Obv Die -I and Rev Die -II

About issues during 2006

All the 2 Rupees "double plus" coins issued in this year show Obv Die -I
and Rev Die -I.

About issues during 2007

The 2 Rupees "double plus" coins issued in 2007 show the following combinations.

a) Obv Die -II and Rev Die -II.

b) Obv Die -II and Rev Die -I

c) Obv Die -I and Rev Die -I
