Hello, nice photographs of "Shivrai" copper coins and Paisa and Double Paise of Tipu.
U have asked a question to group members as to "how to store odd shape coins" ? Hope
following comment / information will be helpful to you:
From the photographs of "Shivrai" and coins of Tipu, one can make out that they are acid
washed / chemically cleaned. My advice to you is that never buy acid ashed/chemically cleaned coins as in the process, flan of the coin may get damaged, weight of the coin may get reduced (though marginally). I agree after "clean-up" they look attractive but in
the process they loose their "ancient look". Keep an eye on "shivrai" coins for various mint marks like trishul, flower, sun - moon, Pindi, Sword, branches with small leafs,
and many more.
I have shivrai, paisa and double paise of Tipu, "Reis" of Portuguese, copper coins of
Maratha, Moughal, IPS which are hand strucked. I put them in 2" x 2" which are available from number "0" (the largest) to "9". No. "1" is the smallest. You can then
keep them in a box vertically. Few disadvantages of keeping them in 2" x 2" is that
too much handling spoils the 2" x 2", you can not see complete details on the uncleaned
copper flan thru the plastic on 2" x 2". These are available locally with any coin dealer or in the exhibitions / auctions. I keep my very larges copper coins loose in a tray (like 15 reis, 30 reis, 60 reis of portuguese, Akbar's Dam weighing 40 gms +/-.
Regarding purchasing Paisa and Double Paisa of Tipu, there is lot of debate on various sights about "fake" available in very large numbers. I have seen a double paisa was withdrawn from one of the auctions as it was suspecious.
Concluding, keep on adding copper coins with coins of other metals, BEARING IN MIND
ABOVE COMMENTS. Hope u will enjoy your collection.
