Charles Darwin Commemorative Coin

Destined to become one of the most influential men in world history, Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury on 12 February 1809. A £2 coin now marks the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and focuses on his theory that man descended from apes, featuring a portrait of Darwin in profile along with that of a chimpanzee. The edge inscription, meanwhile, recalls the publication of his theory with the words ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES 1859.

Inflation resulted in the replacement of the one pound note in 1983. At first the introduction of a coin for this denomination for the first time since the First World War was not very popular. However the coin has now been accepted.

After the fiasco of the attempt by the US Government to introduce a dollar coin in 1979, a number of lessons were learnt.

1. The coin was made of a different colour alloy, making it easy to distinguish.

2. It was made much thicker than… Continue

Hello !!

I am sure that Coin Network will bring many special-interest collectors and hobbyists together. I am a collector, hobbyist, and coin-student based in India.

Indian coins are gradually becoming a rage worldwide. To know more about them, I request you to please join Indian Coins group at

http://www.coinnetwork.com/group/indiancoins

Help us to popularize Indian Coins collection, study and information-dissemination. This can be done if a very large number of friends are brought to this group for sharing of information about Indian Coins.

I am sure that you will help in this venture

Very Cordially,

Shastri JC Philip

Thanks stephen for your prompt reply. In case you are interested in buying Indian coins, here is some info:

I am very happy to note that you are interested in Indian
coins. I am a dedicated coin collector and coin-student,
and I often get duplicates of coins which I wish to sell.
However, I would prefer to use a non commercial direct
offer approach.

To do so, I have created a Twitter account at

http://twitter.com/IndianCoins

Twitter is a social site using which people can send very
short communication to each other. So if you are interested
in knowing about my very cheap and very diverse coin
offers, then please go to the above location and click the
"follow" tab.

If you do not have a twitter membership, then you will have
to create one, which is very easy. Like any other social
site (orkut, facebook), you can easily create an account.

I have plenty of coins to offer in a non-commercial environment,
and I am sure that you will definitely take advantage of this facility
