My name is Sara, I'm 21, from SW Ontario. I've always loved coins and have been collecting ones I found interesting since, well, as long as I can remember. I've enjoyed, over the years, getting coins from other countries in my change or finding them or having people give them too me. I really don't know much about any of them or the coin collecting world but I am looking to learn. I have to admit I was pretty confused browsing the forums here! hahaMy collection isn't very extensive or…See More
I don't have a very organized collection but I have a great fascination when it comes to coins. I love coins from other countries and I love to learn the history of coins!
Welcome to the group Sara, I just noticed the picture, so here's more information on it. First, the bad news, it's damaged and thus known as a "cull" and worth far less than a undamaged coin. Here's the good news... (you ready?) According to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, aka "Krause" your 1860-A 5 Franc from France has a mintage of 4,798,000 pieces and is .900 or 90% Gold. Too bad about the damage, you would have a real nice coin there. I'll try to get you the current melt value, as being a cull there's no real numismatic premium. ~ Jim

I feel the same way about coins, learning and researching a new coin and it's history is fascinating I could waste away hours like that. Did you know that they call coins the "Footprints of History" - Nice phrase if you think about it.
Anyhow welcome and hope to see you around the forums

Those are gold 5 Francs that you've got there. They are not easy to find.
It is best to scan your coins.Using Photoscape will help you with cropping the backgraound, strengthening the contrast,& combining 2 photos into one.
