Isn't "American Silver Eagle" a misnomer?

An eagle is $10, right? So why is the "American Silver Eagle" known as such when it is really only a dollar (in the traditional sense).

1901 Indian Head Cent Error

I have a 1901 Indian head cent that is about the diameter of a dime with an extra deep rim. Does anybody know what this is called? I can't find anything online about it but I don't know what this kind of error is called. I can post a picture this evening if needed.

2010 Cent

What do you think the 2010 cent will look like? Will they revert back to the Lincoln Memorial cents or do you think they will retire that design and mint a new one?

Inherited my wife's grandfather's collection

Well not exactly. My father-in-law inherited the collection but he doesn't collect coins. He said I could take whatever I wanted out of it. He had some decent stuff. Some proof Ike dollars, mercury dimes, buffalo nickels, Indian head cents, a couple walking liberty half dollars, Morgan dollars and Barber quarters and a ton of Lincoln cents and Jefferson nickels. I almost completed my Jefferson nickel set. Just a hand full of dates I'm missing and will probably go pick up from my local dealer…See More

Want to trade P mintmarks for D

I live on the east coast so finding statehood quarters from Philly in circulation is relatively easy. Find ones from Denver has proven a little difficult and finding Denvers in good condition is harder still. I would imagine collectors on the west coast have the opposite problem. Would anybody from the west coast be willing to trade? I would like to avoid buying modern circulated coins from a dealer at inflated prices.

Caribbean Currency

I just got back from a western Caribbean cruise and picked up some of the local currency while I was down there. I got a few dollars worth of Mexican Pesos and about $10 worth of Cayman Island dollars. Pictures to come.

Building Momentum

So I bought a few rolls of various coins today (1 of quarters, 1 of dimes, 2 of nickels and 2 of pennies). Didn't find anything too interesting but I did fill out my collection. My US state and territories quarters set is coming along nicely, started filling some dime and nickel folders and added to my penny collection. Only a couple empty spots left in the Lincoln Memorial Cent 1959-1998 folder.I'm thinking I might pick up a couple rolls of wheaties from eBay to fill in the 1909-1929 and…See More

1982 Lincoln Memorial Pennies

OK, I just learned about the trick to determining if a 1982 penny is zinc or copper (bounce it on the table and listen for the ring) and I think I got it down. But I cannot for the life of me tell the difference between the large and small dates. I have a dozen 1982 pennies and they all look the same to me. Any suggestions?

Yields from Roll Searching

For those of you whole buy rolls from the bank and search them, roughly how many interesting coins do you find on average? 1 per roll, 1 in 10 rolls? Do you think its worth it?

Profile Information

About Me
I'm a 26-year-old, married software engineer from Rochester, NY. I collected coins as a kid (mostly pennies) but stopped in my early teens. Lately I have been searching for a new hobby and decided to get back into collecting coins.

I also enjoy XBox 360, golf, bowling, trading card games, board games and genealogy.
About My Coin Collection
I'm pretty much just starting out by collecting coins I find in circulation. I have some old Whitman folders full of Lincoln pennies, some Peace and Morgan dollars, some foreign currency and a few proof sets. Nothing to brag about.

I'm mostly interested in coins that have actually been in circulation. Proofs and uncirculated coins are nice and worth more but they seem more like mementos than legal tender. Maybe that view will change as my collection gets rolling but for now I'm interested to see what I find in circulation now that I have my eyes open.

Hi Ray, ,the last time I drove on the Indiana Toll road I had to use a Jackson note to pay, put it in and out chinkled 16 assorted dollar coins, including two SBAs, rolled coins from the banks do still yield some goodies occaisionally, especially lately in these times, as many are picking up accumulated change from around the house and turning it in.

Dear Salty Ji (Respected),

you may be interested in joining the Sikh Coins Group on the Coinnetwork. It is quite simple just click on the above bar marked "Groups" and follow the link from there.

Coins of the Sikh Empire used Vikrami Sambat dating system and some of the Silver rupees of Amritsar mint had on them Hindu symbols of Trishul, Nagari Om, Shiv, Ram and so on. The inscription was in the Farsi text with persion numerals.
