Thats why i took up this hobby to help relieve stress.I love it even though i dont really have the money to invest in it. i hope one day to learn more and make it a hobby as well as a profession.
About My Coin Collection
I am Just starting the hobby. I do not really no much. I mostly collect of off pocket change and through friends who find coins. My coins are ordinary, state quarters, lincoln penny set ,jfk half dollers, doller coins ect. Im looking to gradually get more serious but first i would like to learn more and see how to improve my collection from my "pocket change method".

Pocket change is a great way to collect. I have not started a state quarter collection because I decided 10 years ago to wait till they were all out and then collect them from change. Today is the first day for my collection.

Another way of collecting is from Rolls. Therre is a lot of coins out there if you go to banks and just buy rolls. Look at them and then take them back for exchange (minus anything in yout collection)

Good luck. Ifyou have any questions just giveme a quick message

That is how most people started, In this hobby information is essential. I would suggest you find areas that interest you(ie lincoln cents, buffalo nickels, morgan silver dollars etc.) and buy a book that tells you how to properly grade coins which is critical to learning about the hobby. I would suggest photograde. Also you might want to subscribe to a coin publication and then start attending local shows. good luck.

If you are interested in them then I think finding a reputable dealer or ebay seller will do fine. It depends on what you want. THese sets will never go up in value but make great collectables.

If you are interested in a set from each year (modern i.e. post 1965) then for a few dollars more try for proof sets. These are great looking and reasonably cheap (< $10 for most I think)

Ebay is a great place to see the market. Also if you are buying off ebay get buy only with a good picture that shows all the coins. Some coins may have carbon spots so ask before you buy

remember on Ebay if the coin is there today there will be an identical one there next month so do not rush.

Under no circumstances buy those morgan silver dollars you see them touting on TV. They are creating the image that they are rare and valuable. They will be selling you common date coins in circulated condition, probably fine to very fine condition which are worth a bit more then the price of the silver content.(Silver currently trades at around $11 an ounce) If you want to buy common date Morgans you can probably buy all you want on e bay for about $12. I have even seen uncirculated rolls on common dates like 1885 for about $20-$23 a coin, so why buy over hyped coins from the clowns on TV. My suggestion is that if you have say $200 to spend at a coin show, you are much better off in the long run buying the best $200 coin you can find then buying 10 common date circulated morgans coins that won't appreciate as much as that $200 coin will. For any coin you are considering buying always buy the coin in the best grade you can afford. That 1885 morgan dollar is very common in MS 63 but is rare in MS 68. Hope that helps.

Dear Nick

I would fully agree with your comments, that anyone wishing to purchase a coin for their collection should consider buying one which is the best of its kind. This way you know in the future the coin you have will become much sort after by collectors of the future and will definately appeal to anyone wishing to actively study the field of numismatic.

It is sad that many major organisation (reputable ones) have today resorted to selling the mass public low grade coins which, are advertised as being "good future investments" and clearly by the keen coin collector this is absolutely not the case.

Hi Nick

My name is John and I live near Saratoga, New York. I have been in your shoes before when I was younger. You can still find some nice coins in circulation. One way is to ask at the banks if they have rolls of half dollars. I have done this before and found silver Kennedy's before. This is an inexpensive way to stay active in collectiing. There is also a coin show at the Albany, NY Polish Community Center on the first Sunday of every month (except July & August).

please send me ur mailing address and mail id, i will send a beautiful coin or unc banknote from india (coin mailing no:1), i am planning to send more such coin mailings. After u receive it if u are happy with it , u can send me any coin from ur country. please join the club, i will initiate the exchange, please respond, no risk on your side, if u think that sending a single coin or note is not worthwhile then we could decide on increasing the number of coins and unc banknotes, so that our friendship will blossom. This is the initiative of the group called coins for friends join it, make me your friend. i like to have atleast 100 coin mailings to 100 different friends throughout the world by the end of this year.
