you may be interested in joining the Sikh Coins Group on the Coinnetwork. It is quite simple just click on the above bar marked "Groups" and follow the link from there.

Coins of the Sikh Empire used Vikrami Sambat dating system and some of the Silver rupees of Amritsar mint had on them Hindu symbols of Trishul, Nagari Om, Shiv, Ram and so on.

Hello Mohan, nice to know from your message that now you are interested in collecting coins of Maratha King Chattrapati Shvaji. The coins of this great Maratha ruler are available only in COPPER. The gold coins known as HUN weighing about 3.5 gms are extremely rare and known coins in private collectors are about half a dozen. I have not seen any coin issued in SILVER metal. Now the available copper coins of King Shivaji are known as SHIVRAI and were issued in a stylized manner bearing legand on obverse
'SHRI RAJA SHIV" and on reverse 'CHATTRA PATI' with dotted borders on both sides. You can see photographs of these coins in the catalogue of "Maratha Mints and Coinage" by K K Mahashwari and Kenneth W. Wiggins on page nos. 25 to 37. After weakoning of Maratha Kingdom of Shivaji, it was divided into various rulers like Bhosla Rajas of Nagpur, Satara, Pune Tunjaver etc. The interesting thing to note about coins of Maratha rulers is that upto the period of King Shivaji, coins were minted in a very discipline manner but later they were issued in variety of types although the wording remained the same. Various rulers added different type of symbols (mint marks ??) on them like Pindi, flowers, sun and moon, arrow, branch with leaves, trishul, unknown writing in devnagari "7N123", dates in devnagari from 1231 to 1234 and 1240. However, now a days these coins of later period are available in a few numbers and not in good condition. I doubt after a few years they may not be available also due to shrinking of sources from where they are available. Once you read above catalogue on Maratha Mints and Coinage, you will have a fair idea about the coins of Maratha dynesty. The SHIVRAI coins available now a days are in the price range of rs 100 to 800+ and will get from a very few dealers. Do not buy ACID CLEANED bright looking coins for collection. Please feel free to ask me any questions you have. Good luck and best wishes.

Hi Mohan, That's good to know that you collect British India and EIC coins. I not only collect world coins but I love to collect Ancient Indian coins as well, I do not restrict myself to any one specific type or era. I just keep collecting any and every coin which appeals my eye and in good condition provided it’s old. As you collect Portuguese India coins as well you can join my group 'Portuguese India Colonial Coinage & Bank Notes' and I will send you the invite. Please upload all the coins you have on this site and it will be good to see your collection uploaded. The Presidency coins like I, X and XX cash are hard to find in good condition.

Amit Udeshi.
