I started collecting U. S. coins in 1961. I collect all denominations.
In 1961, at age 14, I received an 1837 Capped Bust Dime (XF )
and an 1865 3 Cent Nickel (F),(in my pictures) from
my Grandmother, that had been in the family sense those dates commemorating, coming to this part of South Carolina (1837)
and the end of the Civil War (1865). My Great Great Grandfather
lost 4 sons in the Civil War. One of his two remaining and youngest
sons was my Great Grandfather who was 15 at the end of the war
and came very close to being inducted by the Confederacy and was
saved because the war ended. That is why the 1865 3 Cent Nickel
meant so much to my Great Great Grandfather and to me.
This was the reason I started collecting U. S. coins. They are
not of great value, money wise, but they have great value
to me because they belonged to my Great Great Grandfather David,
born 1793 and died 1869. I am a member of the ANA and life
member of the GPAA & LDMA (Gold Prospecters Association
of America & Lost Dutchman Mining Association).
