Can anyone help me figure out what this coin is? It is approximately the size of a US penny. It looks similar to something I found from the Swiss canton of Vaud, but is not quite the same. Any thoughts?

Steven,
It could also be a 1 Pfennig from one of the German states - one of the Judenpfennige (Jewish Pfennigs).

Aidan.
I think it is swiss token
because of:

1. Shield is common swiss, not any canton shield
2.There is no denomination " name" , because there was difference in the name of same nominal: batzen, rappen, centime, pfenning !!!
Thats why I think it is token, not coin. Perhaps it is token for a payment on ferryboat on swiss lakes, or a payment for transportation or horse-rent token... many opinions, but really not a coin ( as I think )
Thanks for the information. I wasn't sure what to make of it.

Steve
David,
The shield on the obverse is not the Swiss national emblem,as that has a cross in the centre.

It looks more like the emblem of the Canton of Vaud, but at least one city or town in Germany used a similar emblem like a civic coat-of-arms.

Aidan.
