here is a dumb Q, would the coins issued by the US for Philippines (during wwii) come under this category? kinda like those ol eagle and shield coins :) i am guessing even those were for military use? right?

MumbaPuri,
The Philippines were an American commonwealth between 1935 & 1946.The coins were issued for use as currency by the general population.
As to the notes, there were hundreds of emergency notes issued for the various provinces of the Philippines during World War II,plus the Japanese Occupation notes.

Welcome aboard,Vishwanath!
India also issued P.O.W. banknotes as well,in both World War II & the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971,but they aren't even listed in any of the major catalogues, such as the 'Standard Catalog of World Paper Money' by Krause Publications (a.k.a. Pick catalogues).Perhaps, there is an Indian specialised catalogue that lists them.
