Kelantan coins are now available in both silver and gold versions from as little as US$20 postpaid to the United States.

These coins are not some type of promotional item. They are minted by a state in Malaysia ruled by the opposition PAS party. PAS members regard 'fiat' currency as not true legal tender. This is the motive behind the issuing of these controversial coins. The coins are accepted by many traders and businesspeople in Kelantan as well as some elsewhere in Malaysia.

Paul,
You can see examples of them depicted here; http://www.dinarkel.com .

The older ones from the AH1427 (2006) & 2007 coinage are no longer depicted on there.

Paul,
Thanks for the 1 Dirham & 2 Dirhams,which arrived in today's mail.

Aidan.
I managed to get just one of the earlier issue type while I was in Kuala Lumpur in October.

The office I visited was located in Petaling Jaya, on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. While there was a stream of visitors, reflecting the racial make-up of the country, placing orders for the coins. I discussed with a few of the visitors the popularity of the coins among ordinary savers in the country. It is well known by Malaysia that the US$ and even their own currency do not represent value against nascent inflation.

Inflationary expectations are quite high and the now 8 year continuous rise in bullion prices are obviously not a "flash in the pan" unlike previous booms and busts in the precious metal commodity markets.

These coins are accepted in payment by a network of businesses in Kelantan state - also in Kuala Lumpur and among the majority muslim community there is an increasing acceptance of these coins as a means of payment, store of value as well as a vehicle to perform religious obligations.

Not many of the higher value 5 & 20 silver Dirhams remain available for purchase. The 10 Dirham is completely sold out. The gold coins are nearly always sold out. I have very few of these and others in stock.
Paul,
The Kelantanese AH1427 (2006) coins were only struck in gold.

As for the Kelantanese 2007 commemorative 2 Dinars is a coin that I have never come across.I suspect that one is an extremely rare coin.

It is great to be informed that the new coins are actually circulating in Kelantan. The states of Perak & Selangor are planning to put out their own Dinars & Dirhams as well in the next year or so.Whether they will be circulating coins,as opposed to medal-coins like the Kedahan 2008 commemorative ones are, remains to be seen.Either way, they will be very popular with both local people & with collectors, especially outside Malaysia,as most of the numismatic trade within Malaysia are not aware of the benefits of getting the states' modern coins listed in the local numismatic catalogues.

I obtained one of the earlier silver coins. Don't have it next to me while typing this message so I cannot tell you the exact design. From memory it is similar to the gold coin that I got for you on a previous visit to Kelantan.

Second your view on the popularity of the coins in the numismatic trade. However, one relatively strong dealer says that he now handles requests for the item. He correctly mentioned that the silver was occasionally available for him to order, the gold however, was impossible to obtain. I had to present all the arguments to obtain my gold coins. Nothing is ever really "sold out" in Malaysia...

Also there may be socio-political reasons why numismatic dealers in Malaysia don't want to be seen to handle what is obviously a politically contentious product.

You mentioned I think some time ago that these coins are/may at some point be listed in Krause's "Unusual World Coins". Is that correct?
Paul,
If you can find the silver coin, please do upload photos of it as soon as you can.It would be great if it is a modern issue from one of the Malaysian states since coming under British suzerainty.

As for getting listed in Krause's 'Unusual World Coins',I have emailed photos off to George Cuhaj of the Kedahan 5 Dirhams, the Kelantanese 1/4 Dinar,& the Kelantanese 1 Dirham & 2 Dirhams.

It beggars belief that Kelantan's new coins are in circulation, yet bullion prices are very strong, but all over the place. One would expect that the Kelantanese coins would be driven out of circulation as a result.

Let me put it this way. I strongly doubt that any of the traders listed on the http://www.dinarkel.com website would further use any gold or silver Dirham/Dinar that came their way in trade. People tend to hoard what they regard as rare and only part with the item(s) if they find themselves in a position of economic necessity.

The price of gold just rose strongly by over 2% yesterday along with silver. Europe is in a mess with less and less people trusting the blatant lies put out by their leaders. With instantaneous communications, Malaysians and others can see the "handwriting on the wall" and are loading up with precious metals in coin and jewelry form as much as they can afford.

Would advise other readers of this blog who haven't done so to do so asap.

Paul,

Have you had any luck in obtaining any of the Perakese Dinar & Dirham coins yet?

If you have,please put aside a 1 Dirham & a 2 Dirhams for me.

Aidan.
