Canada 1858 10 Cents.

This is the only Canadian coin in my collection dated 1858.I do have an 1859 1c. coin as well.

Both coins are from the coinage of the Province of Canada (1858-59),as opposed to the Dominion of Canada.

This coin cost me NZ$4 back in May based on bullion value alone.

The Province of Canada's silver coins are not common at all.I've found all of them elusive so far, especially the 20c. coin.

Please let me know what you think.

Aidan.

I could wring the b_sterds neck who made a decision to drill a hole in these coins..its sickening.Tons of detail left on this coin..its such a shame.Sory cant find a listing for this one in the Charlton.
Ive got one but it is probably the most embarassing coin i own..I hate it..someone whizzed the crap out of it and I was new to collecting and didnt know better. Never got a replacement as theres no where where I could dump this coin 1st
Martin,
There should be a section under 'Province of Canada'.

I know there is one in Krause.

Krause's prices for this coinage is too low.

It's a bummer about being holed, but it fills a space.

I wonder what the mintage figure was for this coin.

Aidan.
Ok found it...there are 2 different varieties for this coin..I think I may know which one you got but you may want to have a look on your end.
Have a look at the 1st 8. Do you happen to see the top of a 5 rising above the 1st 8? Apparently they used a 5 punch to repair a defective 8 on the original die.
If not its a regular variety with a trends value of 15 bucks for G, 30 for VG, 60 for fine, 100 for very fine...etc.
If its the 5 over the 8 variety, then the price goes bananas. $600 for G, 1000 for VG, 1500 for fine....etc.
Mintage was 1,216,000 coins...which encompasses both varieties
Martin,
This one has the top of the '5' higher than both '8's,so if this is the rare one,it would be worth C$60,as the hole takes the value down to a tenth of the value of the same coin without a hole.

Do you have the Krause prices (in US$) for both types of this coin?

Aidan.
Sorry..no accessibility to Krause prices..no book on hand...but just to reiterate can you see a half ass effort of an overstrike on the 1st 8? You should be able to see the flat part of a five on the top of the 1st 8.
perhaps somebody else can ring in and nail this down.

Martin,
My eyesight isn't as good as it used to be,so I would need either a magnifying glass or a microscope to be able to take a really good close-up look to see if there is anything unusual.

Aidan.
Martin,
I have also got holed examples of the 1870 & 1871H 10 Cents as well.

Aidan.
