Yes, I found this coin from Mauritius at our local coin show. One of the other coin members spotted it and called me over, since he knows I collect animal coins. He was 98% sure it was a Dodo Bird. My husband claimed to be 100% sure... and none of us could find a World Coin book at the show to confirm this. So, I bought it for $7.00 and figured we would see. If it was, it would be a conversation piece, and I certainly didn't have one of these coins. The World Coin Book confirmed it was a Dodo Bird, and now I have labeled it my "ugliest" coin since it certainly was the ugliest bird to be honored on a coin. But maybe some of you out there can change my mind and show me something more likely to win the prize.

Ann,
That Mauritian 10 Rupees is actually quite a nice coin you've got there.I have got it in my collection as well, along with some 5 Rupees coins from the Seychelles, which depict tortoises.

In 1989,the Bank of Mauritius put out a series of gold medal-coins depicting the portrait of the then Prime Minister of Mauritius,Sir Anerood Jugnauth (who is now the current President of Mauritius),which depicts the Dodo on the reverse. You can probably see them depicted up on the Bank of Mauritius' official website.

That's a lovely coin!!!
Ok, if you like Dodo Birds, I guess this is a fine coin. But when I was a child, if your classmates wanted to really taunt you, they called you a Dodo.... or "dead as a Dodo"... so maybe this is a cultural thing, but whenever I hear "Dodo Bird," I have to giggle about it. Besides, a bird that is so big and heavy that it can't fly seems like sad fate. I do have an odd sense of humor, and laugh at things other people might not. I am just glad to have this coin in my collection, and enjoy the humor of my memories.
Ann,
You may find one of these depicted up on http://www.zeno.ru ,which has a section on Mauritian coins.
