Here's a question that is aimed at the members who live in Alberta,Canada.

Does anyone know which British Field Post Office is open - Suffield or Wainwright?

If anyone has the contact details for the British Field Post Office, can you please let us know?

I am seriously interested in buying some British Postal Orders that are issued there,as it would fill in a gap in my postal order collection.I have got nothing from Canada,as far as postal orders go.

Aidan.

Hello Aidan,

Do those BFPO's even still exist? There is no contact information that I could find in any of our yellowpages. If I remember correctly there still might be a BFPO in Ottawa, but If I were to guess that an Alberta one would be open I would Guess Suffield.

Good Luck.

Matt,
I think it was Randy Ash who told me that one of them closed.I think it was the one at Wainwright that closed down.Suffield is the other area in which British soldiers were stationed in Alberta.I'm not sure if the Suffield Army Base has a website.

About the B.F.P.O. in Ottawa,I searched for ages through Google to try & find their contact details.I couldn't find them.

Have you read this; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_Orders_of_Canada ?

Aidan.
Actually you can find out if there is a BFPO in Canada.

Go to www.forces.ca, Click on the Live Chat link and you can talk to a Military Recruitment officer who can answer all your questions. Hope that helps.

Matt,
Thanks for that.

Did you know that there was also a B.F.P.O. at Goose Bay,Newfoundland? I've got no idea when it either opened or closed down.Any extant postal orders that were issued there would be quite scarce or rare.

There's a guy named Sean who has got an Alberta 1936 $1 Prosperity Certificate banknote up on his website at http://www.leagueofnations.net .That note isn't even listed in either Charlton or in Pick, even though it was issued by the Albertan Government.

Aidan.
Actually, Aidan, Charlton has a very nice write-up of the Prosperity Certificate in the "Canadian Government Paper Money" book.

Sean,
Thanks for letting us know about that.

It needs to be listed in the Pick Specialised catalogue as well,& reported to Owen Linzmayer at owen@banknotenews.com ,as he is in the process of compiling a new world banknote catalogue.

Matt,
I couldn't use it,as it requires you to enter information about what Canadian province you're located in,&,besides,I'm not even located in Canada.

I've found out that you have to have any mail from a civilian address to a B.F.P.O. address sent through the B.F.P.O. H.Q. in London (England, that is,not Ontario!).

I'm sure that they would accept Pounds Sterling as payment.I would have to put in an International Reply Coupon to pay for the postage back to New Zealand.

Aidan.
I think your best bet is to inquire with the Canadian Forces to know for sure. These bases would not likely have websites. Infact most army bases do not have websites or much contact info for the main purpose of keeping citizens out.

If I remember correctly I believe the BFPO in ottawa is at the British High Commission, 80 Elgin St, Ottawa, ON K1P 5K7, Canada‎ - (613) 237-2008‎.

You could try to give them a call.

Regards.

Well that seems to be quite a bit of work to get a measly postal scrip. Let me know if you find it!
Matt,
I found some information here; http://www.bfpo.mod.uk/faqs.htm .

Here's a couple of links listing B.F.P.O. numbers; http://www.bfpo.mod.uk/bfponumbers_ships.htm & http://www.bfpo.mod.uk/bfponumbers_static.htm .

Postal orders are like a prepaid cheque,in the sense that you can go into a post office & cash it straight away.

The design of a postal order strongly resembles a banknote, which is why they are classed as being numismatic items. In fact you can read about them here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_Order .

Thanks for the info, but I am not interested in collecting postal scrip. (money orders/postal orders) With the amount of work it is to find this BFPO and get a scrip from it, seems a bit too complicated for my taste. Good luck with the search.
