I just saw the grades for my five sets I set to NGC....they will be shipped today, so I should get them soon.
I was very, very surprised at how well they graded....especially the bullion coin, as I thought it would be the toughest to get a 70 and thus a complete 70 set. All the comments about loose coins and some completely out of their capsule had me concerned.
Here is how mine graded:
2011-W Uncirculated..........69,70,70,70,70
2011-S Uncirculated...........69,70,70,70,70
2011-P Reverse Proof.......69,70,70,70,70
2011-W Proof.....................69,70,70,70,70
2011- Bullion.......................70,70,70,70,70
I've noticed on ebay that auctions for 70 sets outnumber 69 sets for both NGC & PCGS by about a 3.5 to 1 ratio. I'm also really surprised that 99% of auctions are for either all 70's or all 69's. I expected to see a lot of mixed graded sets.
Good luck to everyone on your graded sets...from what I've seen, you will be pleased!!

Permalink Reply by Ike on November 21, 2011 at 2:21pm I just checked the population reports @ PCGS & they only had first strike listed. I was very surprised @ how many were MS, PR were 70. Close to double the 69!!! I guess everyone has an excellent chance of getting a 70 set
. Even the bullion version. 1-68, 156-69, 298-70, 455-total

Steve, congrats on receiving such high grades on your sets. I have also noticed how many sets on the Bay are 70's. But why would anyone sell a mis-matched set, when they can swap the coins out and be able to sell all of one type? All you need to do is procure a Bullion 69, and you will have 5 matched sets, with an extra bullion left over. And for a $1500 investment, you now have the chance to sell 4 for about 12K, and have a set left for yourself. That's great! Yours must have arrived secured, as mine did, but that must have been a concern after reading of all the horror stories being written about. I do have a question though; is the Mint really getting that good with their process, or are the TPG's relaxing theirs? I hope not, but as I can't tell the difference between a 69 or 70, I have to trust them. Again, congratsulation on such good news.
Permalink Reply by Ike on November 21, 2011 at 2:28pm They have asked me a couple of times if I wanted the first strike label for an extra $18. All of the experts here---Is it worth it knowing I will probably get @ least 1 set graded 70????
Ike, thats a good question....there are quite a few people, such as TM, that would prefer not to have the first strike label. As to how they may sell on ebay, the First Strike will probably sell for more....however, since 90% or more will have the FS label, you may have a rarity with the regular label. Of course, as always, "buy the coin, not the label" should apply, so really it's just a preference for which label you like best.
If you have multiple sets to be graded, perhaps you may want to have some of both.
Hi Bruce, thanks. I really haven't seen many individual coins for sale from the 25th annv sets....have you?

I have only seen the S-Mint, and the Reverse proof on the Bay, for $300-$400 each. With the other coins already being released, why would you want to break up a graded set, but hey, you never know.
Permalink Reply by Ike on November 21, 2011 at 3:25pm Thanks Steve. I sent an e-mail to PCGS & asked if I could have a MS,PR 70 set (if I get one) with the first strike label. I'm not sure if they could do that but we will see. I hope I have your luck with my sets. It will be hard to beat your grades--congrats.

Permalink Reply by Ike on November 22, 2011 at 4:46pm I guess I'll stick with the regular 25th Ann. label (no first strike). I would have liked @ least one set of 70 with the first strike label. I know TM would want all with just the plain label & I guess that is what I'll end up with-LOL. I just wonder if I could re-submit a 70 set & get a first strike label. Does anyone know??
--Hi Ike
Unfortunately, we cannot wait to find out the grade of a coin and then determine if a customer would like First Strike. We can put a minimum grade of 70 on a few coins and select First Strike for those coins if you would like but we cannot promise a 70 will be received on any certain coin. Also, in that scenario, if you choose a minimum grade of 70 and the coin is graded lower than that, then not only will the coin not receive First Strike but it will also not receive a holder due to not receiving the grade you would like or higher.
My apologies; please let me know if you would like to put a minimum grade of 70 on any of the coins and select First Strike for those coins, otherwise we will process the order as is. Thank you very much for your patience.
Thank you
Colleen Buckley

Permalink Reply by Clair Alan Hardesty on November 22, 2011 at 4:56pm To me, the number of 70s being awarded means one of two things, either the TPGs are being very generous with their grades for the sets for some reason or all of the coins used in the sets were specially minted for inclusion and the press operators knew it and all of the coins received special handling because of that. I hope it is the latter simply because if it is the former, grading in general will suffer dearly for it. It is distinctly possible that all of the coins were handled with special care, with press operators told to do so because the coins were going to be part of a special offering. Tom Jurkowsky hinted that even the bullion coins that were struck in SF may have been the product of a special run dedicated to inclusion in the anniversary sets when he told Coin World that the San Francisco coins (bullion and uncirculated) were struck in September and October. He did not specify that any one coin was struck in any one month, only that both had been minted in the two months together. Even at that, it looks like SF had already stopped striking bullion coins for APs before September so a run of coins dedicated to the sets is entirely possible. Even though there are people who seem to pay inordinate amounts for First Strike labels, even they may accept the lack of those words this time simply because of the amount of publicity this set has received. It appears that virtually everyone knows that all of the coins were sold the first day and that all will have shipped before the cutoff dates. This may mean that coins with the FS or ER wording may not bring the premiums that they have for other coins and that would mean that $18 per coin for FS would not return at time of sale.
Permalink Reply by 3rdStooge on November 24, 2011 at 3:05pm Steve, I got what I wanted, but compared to you I crashed and burned! There were coins loose in the box as reported by PCGS, but maybe it was really caused by me walking under a ladder, the black cat that crossed my path, or the shattered mirror in the bathroom. Who knows? I'll shuffle my cards and have one full MS70 set. Maybe the others can be sold as scrap! :)
2011-W Uncirculated..........70,70,70,70,69
2011-S Uncirculated...........70,69,69,69,69
2011-P Reverse Proof........70,69,69,68,68
2011-W Proof.....................70,69,69,69,69
2011- Bullion......................70,70,69,69,69
I see that PCGS charged my card for this yesterday. I gotta' figure they are getting this mess to the post office for the return trip.
My order number was 38354XXX. I'd like to see what others get for grading when their order numbers are close to mine.
Thanks for any response in advance!
