I am posting photos of three Lincoln cents I have. Can you give me an idea of what the MS grade might be on these. I think I have the photos large enough to catch marks and blemishes. First is a 1931-S, second a 1927-S, third a 1909-SVDB.

Hey guys!

I am not mad at anyone. I am just glad to hear that IGE did not get burned on this coin. This is a very educational discussion that should be posted on this site.

I was just wondering if anyone from the other coin sites caught the imposter.

A couple did TM, but unfortunately some long time collectors did not. And that is the scary part.

The really surprising thing to me was that several of the long time collectors IGE mentioned actually commented on specific problems with the coin but still never realized it was fake. It wasn't that they didn't see at least some of the flaws, but for whatever reason that still wasn't enough. That is the part that really makes me believe a lot of collectors subconciously decide a coin is real before they ever look at it just because of who has it or where they see it.
This is why the reputable third party grading companies (mainly PCGS and NGC) are so important to the hobby. It also emphasizes that collectors need to learn as much as possible about their hobby and the coins they buy. PCGS, NGC, and ANACS are the best at detecting counterfeits, thus making them the grading companies of choice among collectors and command the premium numismatic prices. These grading companies and their graders have done their homework on this subject matter. When it comes to rare coins, the collector pays for the certification of authenticity that is most important. The grade is simply a bonus.

Yes I'll admit I got caught not paying attention. Good one Earl, glad to see you up to your old tricks. :D

Me too. I'd take IGE's word on any coin or bill over any photos I've ever seen.
