Permalink Reply by Clair Alan Hardesty on January 30, 2011 at 1:27pm It is not really a gold coin, though it might have some gold in it. It may be a pattern piece made of any of a number of alloys that were used. You cannot rely on the information on the coin for its content since it is not a circulation piece. That really does not matter much as far as value is concerned though. Such a coin is far more valuable than its metal content.
This appears to be the coin from Heritage auction #1125 (May 28, 2009) where it sold for $4025 (including buyer's premium). Lot #1444, 1878 $1 Goloid Metric Dollar, Judd-1563, Pollock-1754, Low R.6, PR62 PCGS.
This one is said to actually be struck in goloid alloy.AWESOME COIN!! So do you own this coin Jiri, and did you win it at the Heritage Auction? Or are you just asking if this type of Gold Coin is really a U.S. coin? I get a little lost on these post that just say is it real?
