Re: http://mintnewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/new-gold-eagle-key-dates.html

So the mint sold 9,200 1/4 uncirculated gold eagles. Presumably the mint doesn't mint the coins as they're sold - presumably it mints them en masse. Like 10,000 at a time or something. So, if only 9,200 were sold and the series is now discontinued, what does that mean? Does it mean that 9,200 is all that was minted or does it mean that the mint will be melting down the remaining coins and use them to mint 2009 bullion coins?

In this case, I think the amount minted would be very close the the amount sold. At some point during 2008, the US Mint had one final production run of the coins. The coins from this run were sold into the next year until all of them were gone.

In some past years, sales of prior year dated Gold Eagles continued until the current year issues were released. In those instances, I think there would have been more minted than sold. The remainder were presumably melted down.
