Have you ever bought coins on e bay, If so has it been a positive or negative experience.

I have in the past few months started buying coins on e bay. If you are proficient in your grading you can find some great buys if you can get through some of the muck and overgraded coins being sold. I have in the past bought my coins from a few dealers I trusted, coins shows, and auctions for higher end material. I recently started a collection of walkers and I have gotten much better deals on e bay then I was able to get at coins shows. Although there are many people selling overgraded coins, if you know how to properly grade and the scans provided are good, you can get some very good deals if you are patient. If I did not trust my grading skills I would stay away from e bay.

Ive had some problems with the sellers, but i like paypal because your purchases are protected !
I sell foreign/world coins on eBay in mixed lots. 10 years ago I was even selling some U.S. coins I had gotten at auction. I've never tried to grade anything I've sold. I sell a lot of collectibles now and people will sometimes ask me to grade the item. I tell them to refer to the picture(s).

I recommend that to every buyer. Judge condition with the picture but ALSO READ THE DESCRIPTION. Sometimes you'll get a shady seller or someone who will mislead you with a bad picture. Sometimes you might overlook something and an honest seller will mention that flaw in the description.

PayPal's reputation is in the sewer, along with FleaBay anyway! I for one would certainly never use either.

You should go here; http://www.wensy.com .

A very, VERY, important tool that everyone using ebay should bookmark is toolhaus.org which is a online search engine that will pull up neutral and negative feedbacks by ebay user name. I've had over 2,000 purchases on ebay and only been caught twice, once when a seller offered a book that was never delivered and the second time was for a "scarce variety" Canadian Cent which came in but was the common type. It's important to check feedback, even when the percentage looks good ~ Jim
I checked out Wensey, I don't know about everything else on the site but the coins are mostly junk and low grade stuff which I certainly would not want. E bay requires that you have a minimum level of grading ability. I trust my grading ability in the series that I collect more then anyone else. I know what to look for and can most of the time can tell if a coin has been doctored in any way. I just don't buy from sellers on e bay who don't provide good enough scans and who don't accept returns. Also stay away from any seller who charges a restocking fee. thats legalized stealing and 9 times out of 10 those sellers are selling overgraded cleaned crap.

Jim,
That http://www.toolhaus.org is very good. Some members of Coin Talk were using it to keep an eye on Pamela 'The Savannah Scammer' Donnelly (who was then using the handle 'pjd1966') as part of their attempts to get her N.A.R.U.'d off FleaBay.

She got booted off http://www.overstock.com pretty quickly.
