Has This Finally Gone too Far?
The Perth mint has released Transformer coins. No the coins dont shape-shift and try to take over the world, the simply depict transformers. But does this actually have any numismatic merit?

Probably as much as the movie has cinematic merit, I tried to watch it online and suffered through about 10 minutes of it before I called it quits. Who are we to judge? I see somebody is already marketing Micheal Jackson Gold plated Kennedy Half Dollar's. Anything to make a buck nowadays, it's really quite sad. What next? Well...because they know that there are people who collect them...and the promise of a low mintage of 5,000 makes it even more... "attractive:.
for me...should I buy this coin, it's only because I am a fan of Transformers, and I perhaps would add it to the display of my Transformers action figures...I would treat them not as coins of numismatic value, but as a collectible item for display purposes...
just my senseless sense...LOL

.......... Hence the "Special display case" I take it. As someone who is active in the collectables market I can understand that perspective, but as a numismatist and avid coin collector - I do not like these at all

The Franklin Mint have never done colourised medal-coins.
In addition to the Pobjoy Mint,the Commonwealth Mint & the London Mint have also done colourised medal-coins,as have the New Zealand Mint,the Perth Mint,the Singapore Mint,& the Royal Canadian Mint.

Those coins have GREAT numismatic value if you're a Transformer fan. I'm not a fan, but I suffered through the movie JUST to view the smoking-hot women in that flick. It was absolutely worth the seven bucks.
There is nothing wrong with the Perth Mint making the coins, if you don't like them, don't buy them. I'm positive that there is a group of people that can't get a hold of those coins fast enough.

These two coins are very popular! Personally, I enjoy the packaging, as I believe that there should always be an easy way to display beautiful commemorative coins while keeping them protected. And the fact that it looks like a toy is just a perfect match with the subject matter. These coins are fun, and that's the point!

I'm back after a long hiatus! I wouldn't mind if it were a private company minting these, but find it strange that a gov't is issuing them as legal tender. Let's hope the US Mint never goes down this path.

Don't laugh! I still have all of my toys from my childhood. Many of which are the original Transformers and many of those are still in the original boxes and are worth multiples of what my parents paid for them. There is a small collecting community that fits the niche. I have been tempted to sell my toys and place the money into other things like coins or other investments. Today's working-class coin investors like myself grew up watching the cartoon series. Look at it this way. This marketing to the younger generation is great for numismatics. It exposes the younger generation to coins in a fun way. I applaud the Hasbro marketing department and thank those responsible for introducing this to the younger generation. Transformers are "AWESOME" in my book!
