Reverse:

MS-63/64
Does Abe have a smudge on his shoulder? His hair also shows some wear. I would say MS 62 from what I can see. It will be interesting to see what True Money has to say here.
WOW! Beautiful full red coin! The spot on the shoulder appears to be created as a result of a strike through error, most probably with a small piece of metal that was trapped between the obverse die and the planchet during the minting process. This coin probably graded PCGS MS64RD or MS65RD (Strike Through).

Well, Lureuin pretty much nailed this one right off the bat and Steve W and TM caught the mark on the shoulder and the RD didn't even slide by. Great job guys. Here are photos of the coin in the slab. I agree with TM that the mark on the shoulder is from something coming between the die and the blank during striking but as you can see it isn't mentioned on the slab. I think I would have said 64 on this one but I don't do a lot with copper so I'm certainly no expert on them. Thanks to everyone who played along.

It appears that PCGS may have counted the strike thru mark as a major factor in the grade.

Maybe so, but I would have thought it shouldn't affect the grade if it occurred at the Mint. They apparently didn't think it was post Mint damage, or it shouldn't have graded at all. I think the strike-thru attribution would have had to have been requested by whoever submitted it and an extra fee paid to be stated on the slab but it sure looks like it to me so I would think it should not affect the grade.

The coin submitter should not be responsible for designating this type of error. That is the responsibility of the grading company. Currently, I am writing an article that should appear in one of the major coin publications in a few months. I hope it will be very informative and captivating to the grading community.
