The first few grading discussions I posted were a little easier. This is an 1870 Seated Liberty Quarter. Let's see if you can guess the grade on this one!

was this coin cleaned?
I am no expert on these but this coin just doesn't look right to me. The look to the Eagle on this coin bothers me in that it doesn't appear consistent with the rest of the coin. My guess is the coin has altered surfaces and it also shows marks probably resulting from improper cleaning as 3rdStooge mentioned..
I agree with Buffalo, the obverse and reverse appear to be two different coins. This is a strange one.
Wow! No one can give this coin a grade. This grading company did!

I'm really at a loss on this one TM. I think the wear on the obverse would put the obverse at about EF40. The reverse as I said before doesn't seem to show a normal pattern or look to it and I have no clue on that. I'm not trying to disparage the coin, it just really doesn't look right to me but it could very well just be the way it looks in the photo.
The coin does look a little better in hand than the photos indicate. However, the photos do show the obvious flaws within the coin. I will try to post the results when I get home from work tonight. I am still waiting to hear some more views before posting the results.

Hi!,
This is certainly an interesting coin! I'm not sure, but the obverse looks to me like it may have some residue on it from an old holder. The strikes to the obverse and reverse also look sharply different. I don't know what the grading company gave it, but I wouldn't mind having one like this! I'd give it a 63 on balance. Looking forward to seeing what it actually did grade at. All the best, Larry
Ok! Here it is!

I am in agreement with all of you who think this coin has been cleaned. From the looks of it, this coin may have been cleaned multiple times or one time very intensely! Yet, NGC somehow determined that the cleaning was not severe enough to classify it as a cleaned, altered, or a details coin. I might be wrong. However, the entire surface of the coin is too dull and non-lusterous, and seems to be completely void of any toning (except for the small patches that look like staining that could not be removed by the cleaning process).

This is a coin that I purchased a few years back for $540 as my first proof example from the 1800s. I was extremely happy at the time. However, now I am more educated about the grading and conditions of coins and cannot understand how this coin was not considered to be a "CLEANED" coin by NGC.

Thank you all for your input!

I have to agree with you TM. I would never have guessed the grade they gave to this coin. I think it has been cleaned and the reverse makes me think more than that has been done.
It looks better in the holder...and probably in person. I also thought it might of been cleaned, but from the first photo's wouldn't of guessed this to be a "proof" coin. In the pics in the holder, you can see the proof aspects much better.

Still, a nice coin to own TM, and only 1000 minted!!
