Future of first strike and current outrageous prices.

I was wondering what you think will be the future of first strike coins. I see a few years going for way over book still.

First Strike coins are a gimmick. It was something worked out between some dealers and the grading services to make a few extra bucks. Over the years, they will not retain their large premium over regular issue graded coins. Any one paying extra for that is throwing their money away.

I totally agree!!! A PCGS or NGC PR69 or MS69 is just that (especially in the graders eyes...and shoud be in ours) and any other designation on the label is just "marketing". At least NGC stopped using the "First Strike" designation and uses the more appropriate "Early Releases", but again, it doesn't make the coin any more special. As the mint frequently replaces the dies, you are just as likely to get a 70 graded coin or a 68 during the 10th month of production as the first month!!
wow, almost a month till the first reply :D. I wonder how many people think that the first strike coins are actually struck first. I was at a flea market and had to listen to someone tell me how the first strike coins have a stronger strike because the dies wear out.

I knew this wasn't true but didn't want to argue with him. :D

I guess the fact remains regardless of the meaning, the coins due carry a rarer label. In coin collecting rarity counts so i'm guess these coins will always carry somewhat of a premium, but nowhere near the current.
I second what Indiangoldeagle says, slabs designated "first strike" are a gimmick. ~ Jim

To me, it's the coin that creates the rarity, not the label.

I personally stay away from it. They are all made out of the same metal and they are not numbered like notes to prove other wise that they came first. It's all just a gimmick to get our hard earned money. If I want to buy something that unique, I buy it because it look unique and I like it.
