I had sworn to myself that I would not buy anything more from the Mint after their actions of 2009 and their terrible quality control.  But I thought I would give them one more chance with something that was relatively cheap.  Today I got the coin and put it under a magnifying glass and there in the middle of the right boot of the central figure was a black bubble.  So for the first time I am sending this back to the Mint.  It is incredible to me how they could send out a proof coin with an obvious naked eye defect.  I know there are many of you who talk about your string of MS70's.  What I get from the Mint are visible defects.  I am not dealing with the scrutiny of a PCGS or NGC.  What I am dealing with is showing the coin to a non-collector friend and have him say :"What is that black bubble on the boot?"  So back to the Mint for purchases never more.

I, like you, do not send my coins in for slabbing (I am a collector, not a trader). The one exception that I am considering is one of last year's silver proof quarters and that is because it is so defective, minted with a damaged die. While my two AVDFL dollars look to be perfect, I received a couple of less than 68 Lincoln and Braille dollars last year. I think that the services have all lowered their standards for MS/PR70 (NGC now says that to be a 70 a coin does not need to be perfect, it only has to accurately refelect the die state and have no post-strike damage) but I do think that we should expect modern commemerative coins to be delivered at MS/PR69. An occasional 68 can be tolerated but anything less than that should not pass inspection (if inspection is even being done anymore). Coins should be inspected before leaving the mint and at least visually checked before being packed by PBGS for shipment. More realistically, PBGS should do incoming product inspection and reject any product that is sub-standard whether it be coins from the mint or packaging from other vendors.
When I look at a Proof coin and the only thing I can see is the defect in the coin, you know there is no such thing as quality control under this current Mint administration. I have never seen such an apparent defect in a coin produced for circulation.
Therefore the only conclusion is that the Mint is out to rip off collectors. They are a disgrace to the public service.
With all due respect to our Veterans.....the obverse reminds me of the beginning of the old TV show "My Three Sons"
Allegedly, the Mint is sending me another Proof, and I can't wait to see what this one looks like!? After dealing with the last return senario, I wonder what the coin will look like this time?

Right, that is why I just "said no" to this one. I can see no merit to this coin. I feel the same way about the BSA coin. Where are the ASE proofs?

The Mint is too busy producing crap. I was going to send back my disabled vets coin but hesitated when I realized I would be exchanging my boot bump for Bruce's scratched coin. That is what this Mint is all about. The BSA coin is a politically correct disgrace. I would not take that coin if it was free. It appears that our coinage now must look like the background of an Obama speech: 8 blacks, 2 Asians, an Hispanic, and a white female.
Hey Lee, I hope you don't get my reject, but who the heck knows?! Now the continuing saga of my DAV purchase: The Mint now hit my CC AGAIN, for the same coin, which I still don't have, so I finally called my bank, and the reversed the charge. Now if the Mint does indeed send it, I will just send it back un-opened. What a nightmare!

Bruce,
Your saga of woe certainly reminds me of the whole UHR fiasco. They were supposed to have things figured out with Pitney Bose by this time. I had an unbelievable back and forth with them before they finally shipped. It took months even though I ordered 15 minutes after they went on sale. All subsequent orders for other coins went through without a hitch. Go figure?
