Do you really think dealers maliciously release old coins into circulation with the intent of increasing the traffic into their own personal stores? I wasn't aware of that, but I dont think thats a bad thing. Im not sure how they can guarantee that the buyers will target their own facility however.
Im not a dealer, but I personally keep them and the older ones that are not worth too much over face value, I give them to new collectors. (From what Im seeing I think dealers put them into their bargain bins.) Anything worth a few bucks I still got them and Im still trying to make a decision if I should make the time and sell them on ebay, or take way less than their trend value and sell them to a dealer. With the fees on ebay both alternatives will probably work out to be the same anyway.
I remember how I became a new collector. I had approx. 4 years worth of loose change I threw into a huge glass jug that one uses to make home made wine. Then once when I couldn't move it any more, I decided to roll er all up, and take it to the bank. During the sorting stage I discovered all the various years, varieties, mint marks etc, and decided why not keep an example of each. I bought the collecting albums, 2 x 2's and other reference books to teach myself the hobby.
During the ongoing sorting I 'upgraded' and kept the best example. My collection then grew from the newest coins to the oldest. It took me approx a year to get though it all, and from what I remember I cashed in approx 1200 bucks
In closing for me it wasnt the fact that I stumbled across some older coins during the sorting, it was the fact I had alot of the varieites and years already at hand that got me hooked. That and the thrill of the hunt with what I had was the captivating thing..
