Hi, Im a Canadian but during these hard economic times over the past 8 month, Ive been taking it easy on my Canadian collection, (as all I need now is the major key dates) and I started to work on a BU Red collection of Lincolns, all mint marks.
Working backwards I got em all, 2009 all the way back to 1934, along wth some good examples of sporadic dates prior to this, and now they are really getting pricey, but Im determined to get it done.
A couple of them have the odd carbon spot on them and I was wondering if you think an acetone bath for a couple days or so may clean em up. Ive got them all in airtights with the hopes I have stopped them from getting any bigger.
Any thoughts?
BTW love putting this collection together, i got the red book and everything to help with my purchases. I live approx 1.5 hrs from New York State so all the more pricier ones I have been getting from coin shows down there.
Thanks
Some Brasso and a brill-o pad ought to take those spots off. If that doesn't work, use a dremel tool with a polishing bit to shine that bad-boy right up.
I'm just messin' with you Martin. Keep them stored with Silica Gel. Acetone probably won't do anything for those spots, but you could give it a try.
Thanks Minnie....I initially thought a wash with some mild type solution..something like Easy-Off Oven Cleaner, for a couple days would work. If that was a no go, then S.O.S pads. :- )
Ill experiment with the acetone, but juding by your response, Im not too confident it will work. Ive got these things showcases in airtights already, but I will throw a silica pad or 2 in there to assist with any potential growth.
I wonder why they call these spots carbon spots when by rights they appear to be the end result of someone hacking all over them with a severe case of broncitis.(sic)
Just a follow-up. Acentone bath was of no use what so ever.
Will update you all know 10 years down the road to advise if the airtites stopped them from getting bigger.
