With the Platinum Eagles and Gold Buffalo coins gone, the 2008-W Gold Eagles seem to be emerging as a new area of interest.

The one ounce proof coin is already sold out. The 2008-W Unc Gold Eagles are showing extremely low sales figures, which might translate to low mintages. (full post on Mint News Blog)

I recently bought some of the one-quarter ounce 2008-W Unc Gold Eagles, as I see this coin as having the best potential.

Thoughts?

Curious why you have focused on the quarter ouncers as, say, opposed to the half ouncers? Mintages?

I was looking at the various offerings at the mint site--- I am a bit tempted to go for a set or two of the four
piece UNC gold eagles--- my read being that if this is the end of the road for the fractionals--- that perhaps
these are the coins to focus on and the four piece set gives you one of each.

But if I were going to buy single fractional coins---- the half ouncers have much less markup over spot. Though
there may be a larger market for the quarter ouncers due to the fact that they are less expensive (in terms of
money out of one's pocket).

I focused on the quarter ounce since they will most likely have the lowest mintage. Usually the half ounce coin has the lowest mintage, but this year they are included in the US Mint's "Double Prosperity Set." Once this is taken into account, the half-ounce might have the highest mintage.

The premium on the quarter ounce is a bit more, but I think it more than makes up for itself with the potential for being a low mintage key date.

You can't go wrong with the 4 coin set either.
