Hey Guys I would love your opinions on this one. I recently got hold of a decent 1979 Susan B Antony $1 coin. Only I cant decide which variety it is. So I have decided to cast a slightly wider net and ask your considered opinions on the matter.
Is this a type 1 or 2 ie.- is this the 'clear S' or the 'filled S'
The test of type for the 1979 S Proof SBA isn't so much whether or not it is filled or clear as the common name suggests. The shape of the letter S it the real test. In the Clear-S, type II dollar, the curves of the S are round. In the Filled-S, type I dollar, the curves of the S are oval, flattened on the top and bottom, like your example which is a type I dollar. Many of the type II dollars have frost inside the S and can be mistaken for type I coins (the generally more desireable ones have mirror finish inside the S). I have included three pictures, two type II and one type I, showing the three main appearances of this coin. Note the shape of the S on the open and clear (type II) coins as compared to the filled (type I) coin.
I think that clears it up, seriously no pun intended, quite nicely.
Type I or Filled S it is then. ...... but now I still don't have the type II dollar
